We may feel pride thinking that India is an offshoring leader for IT services across the world, but the reality is as cruel and grim as glamorous it seems.while the so called "W" of recession is momentarily at its upper edge, financial reports says a different story altogather.
A market study says, five countries (India, China, Canada, Ireland, and the Philippines) accounted for 95
percent of the total market for BPO /IT offshoring in 2004. By 2008, the share of these five countries has declined to 80 percent. The countries that have made some inroads in the market include Malaysia , Vietnam,Thailand and Singapore in Asia; Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, and Romania in Europe; and Argentina, Brazil and Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Mexico in Latin America.And importantly ,Vietnam is emerging as a low cost offshoring leader whose cost for IT functions is lower than that of China and India.
Considering all the above, there is an immense pressure on indian subsidieries to cut expenses so as to compensate for negative balance sheets there, or else loose the service delivery centre to above low cost nations.
Ignorant to the above facts, We IT Engineers, are expecting huge hikes every year leave aside other factors such as real state prices which are touching skies. The only quality which keeps us tall in the crowd is our cheap rate card ,and considering the greed of higher and higher packages,the factor of "low cost" will be no more valid in coming years, and the only way to fish in this troubled water would be to enhance our technical skills and make it competitive to the costly engineers of US or Europe.
In the table above, I have sampled few imaginary characters from IT Industry for better explanation !! take an example of Vijay, would this guy survive the chopping, when he himself knows he has no skills to showcase, he himself knows that he is surviving here because MNCs recruit such people solely to bloat the billings to client and such resources are as useless for them as a used tissue paper...it wont take much time for this bubble to burst.. isn't it.. ?
Considering Avinash, he has been in industry for long, but has he expanded his horizon of technical or leadership skills ?? Or worst, let's talk of Karan, the day Onsite Architect team decides to take off the offshored tasks back to them, this guy will be the biggest looser in market.
The cases of Kishore and Sridhar are very strange,while Kishore is NIT passout ,given a chance, he could have contributed and proved his mettle to great works and projects, but the most cruel part of story start here, the offshored component of projects which he and most of us get to work on, is most of the time crappy or of mundane nature.Call it our onsite DM's stratagic decision, or lack of trust on our skills, but fact remains the same all these years.
And the benefit of this "california gold rush" is enjoyed by people like Sridhar who are in organizations such as DRDO because people like Kishore chose to be in an MNC.With such people in there, Imagine the future of Indian Satellite mission 15 years down the lane ??
While, neither I am here to demoralize myself or my friends, nor do I forget the gratitude for the great opportunities this industry has given to all of us , and fact of the matter also is, many many of us have proved our mettle too. I do'nt even argue on the luxury hobbies and Interests which people are persuing these days keeping a blind eye on an uncertain future.
The sole intention of this article is to convey a question which comes every day in my mind while I swipe in my ID card to office,and the question is, am I worth of it ? the more this question knocks the head that day, the more madness I get to elevate my skills and prove my worth to no one but myself....!!
I hope I could hit the nail deep down the head. :)
